By appointment only: The bright lights of London!

We’ve been so honoured to retail our lights at Liberty London but often find that people want to see even more of the range. Those that do visit our Wirskworth showroom are always taken aback at the colours, shapes and sizes of the lights and we understand that with such an investment you want to consider all of the options.

A collection of lights, wallpapers, fabrics and furnishings, decorate the walls of No 39 Amwell Street. Being based up in Derbyshire, we have always been that bit too far for our London based customers and designers to visit which is why ourselves and Blackpop will be descending on London with our full collections in tow.

Blackpop are incredible designers with a real passion and flair for design. Their elegantly distressed wallpapers, fabrics and furniture punk up the rich tapestry of the past, to create opulent yet random anarchic patterns, on richly figured fabric and wallpaper, creating vivid designs for stately homes of the future.

From 20th May, we’ll be open for visitors to drop in, to have a browse and a play with colours, create bespoke lights and to get hands-on with the truly luxurious fabrics and wallpapers that adorn this new showroom.

If you’re working on a project that you think Curiousa lights would be great for then we are opening the shop for appointments only for the next month. To book appointments use the details below.

Summer with Curiousa: Soft curves & bold colours

We gave you a glimpse a few blogs ago into the photoshoot – our first with Jennifer Haslem. We had such a great day and as you’ll see from the photos, Jennifer really understood everything we’re about. The pops of colour with the yellow accentuate the playfulness and boldness of the lights being launched.

The lights being launched are the Oshka, the Oolong and the Gobstopper lights. The Russian-doll silhouetted Oshka lights show off their dancing colours against the pastel palettes of the Oolong pendant. Put the two together or simply position them as stand-alone pieces, they’re set to make a statement in any room.

Standing tall amongst the Oshka and Oolong is the Gobstopper light – taking its name from the classic childhood sweet, they are enough to leave any audience speechless!

As with all of our other lights, the pendants are available in all 21 of the Curiousa glass colours, get in touch if you’d like our team to send you one of our sample packs.

We’ve got some BIG news coming very soon but for now, we'll let you enjoy your first taste of summer!

Ragdale Hall becomes 'Beautifully Bespoke'

At the heart of everything we do, sits the word ‘bespoke’. A notion that has started to take off and become known by our customers, a notion that shapes the future for Curiousa.

We were recently approached by Liz Millington Interiors who as part of the refurbishments for Ragdale Hall, were looking for something a bit different for the Verandah Bar lighting. The Hall itself combines state-of-the-art facilities with the charm of traditional Victorian architecture to create one of the most luxurious and relaxing health spas in the country. A mixture of old and new – just what we love!

We’d never designed a chandelier like this one and as we always do with new projects, learnt a lot along the way! There were challenges from electricians, architects, questions about head height and more! As a collaborative project though we were able to work together to figure out how best to utilise what space we did have.

Eight different pendants adorn the ring, with eight different colours of glass in different shapes; those enjoying the pieces can find themselves getting lost in these feature pieces.

“The feedback from the guests has been amazing and they have been very pleased that we’ve been able to update the area without losing the essence of the much loved original room”

We don’t want customers to be afraid to bring their lighting dreams to life; we have some of the best designers, suppliers and glassblowers around… Challenge us!!

Lights. Camera. Action.

We’ve just got back from London after a fantastic photoshoot with Jennifer Haslam for our new lights and the 2016 Collections.

Having styled our own shoots in the past, we decided to take the leap and work with Jennifer to get a different perspective on set designs and how to achieve those front covers and feature shots that populate the mood boards of bloggers and magazine editors.

With so many incredible stylists and photographers in the industry, it was quite a daunting task knowing who was going to understand Curiousa, and come up with a set that would complement the colours, shapes and craftsmanship behind our lights. As soon as Esther met Jennifer, ideas were bouncing around. As with all of our customers, everyone has their own interpretation of style and seeing the ideas come to life was inspiring.

Our photographer for the day was Simon Bevan – a name we saw cropping up again and again as we created our Pinterest inspiration board!

Not only were Jennifer and Simon incredibly professional but so too were the team at Cloud and Horse; they couldn’t do enough for us and looked after us with constant food and refreshments, keeping energy levels and spirits up throughout the day.

Our eyes won’t stray off the inbox until we see the shots filtering in… We’ll be sure to share them with you once they're here!

We're so excited to be bringing you our new IP44 lighting range, for zones 2 & 3. Refreshing and alternative options for both bathroom and spa environments, allowing for the inclusion of stylish mood lighting.

There is a wide choice of shapes, including Pear Drop, Strial, Bowl, Teardrop and Round. Each shade is suspended by a fabric coated flex with a choice of four metal fitting finishes. With 21 different glass colours to select from, our lights can be made to fit most environments from soft and relaxing, to refreshing and stimulating.

The range also lends itself well to commercial usage, offering a great diversity of colours, shapes and fittings providing flexibility in application. Whilst each piece is individually hand-made, we regularly take larger commissions for commercial projects, including spas and hotels.

Maison & Objet - A Royal Collaboration

Starting off her career creating bone china pieces herself, Esther, founder and designer of Curiousa, is thrilled to be collaborating with the UK’s leading fine bone china manufacturers, Royal Crown Derby. Not only are their collections beautifully crafted and can be traced back to 1750 but they have the same core values as Curiousa, being the only UK fine bone china company still producing all of their ware in this country.

The first showcase of the collaboration will be on one of the finest design stages around – Maison & Objet 2016.  With a stand in Hall 7, K172, Scènes d’intérieur Gallery, Royal Crown Derby will be amongst some of the most prestigious international brands exhibiting a range of their tableware and luxury giftware with some Curiousa lights handpicked to complement the collections.

2016 - Going back to basics

We’ve read some great pieces so far on predicted trends for the upcoming year and are really excited by what we’re expected to see. Below we’ve picked out some of our favourite trends:

With this year’s Pantone colours of the year it is widely predicted that pastel colours are to dominate home décor this year. Soft blues, pinks, yellows and greens are thought to be key influencers with this trend. Did you know that we have a choice of six semi-opaque colours you can choose from?

2016 seems to be the year of stripping design back to basics. Wood, natural elements and ceramics are big trends this year and its something really close to our heart. For the lights that are complemented by wood we use local woodsman Matt About Wood. Every piece he produces is unique to the next, we love the story wood can tell and can’t wait to see what is going to be done with this trend this year!

One trend we’re really excited about is ‘Tableware’ – with ‘Foodies’ taking over, people are getting much more into dining both in and out of the home which may be a reason this trend is so apparent for 2016. Avenida Home is a brand that hold Curiousa lights and they produce some beautiful and incredibly unique tableware collections, definitely one to watch out for this year!

Lastly, what has got to be our favourite predicted trend from Vogue is the ‘Statement Pendants’. We often have people coming into our showroom, having a play around with the lights and creating their own statement pieces. From 20-drop stairwell chandeliers to additional bubbles on lights or mixing and matching colours, our lights are adaptable and can change any room in any house.

Our 2016 Spring Collection will be launching very soon and is certain to tick a few of the expert’s predictions boxes, you’ll have to keep following for more on that though!

We’re really excited for the year ahead and thrilled you’ll be joining us for it!

Pendants in the Park

Screen Shot 2015-11-11 at 16.11.57.png

Our team here in Wirksworth sends lights all over the world; to showrooms, businesses, hotels and homes. We love our Curiousa lights and the story each one of them helps tell in their new setting.

Very recently our friends at Avenida Home in Bath sent us some photos of our pendants in their ‘part gallery, part showroom, part studio’ … And we fell in love!

We were delighted when we saw our pendants against Avenida Home’s new backdrop, courtesy of ‘Surface View’ – a company that have licenses from all of the major British art gallerys to turn famous and timeless pieces of art into almost anything. A mix and match of Curiousa pendants sit amongst ‘An Alley of Trees in a Park’ a piece produced by Jean Joseph Xavier Bidauld that currently sits in the National Galleries of Scotland.

Avenida Home produce a stunning range of home accessories, including some beautiful ceramics, linens, place mats and coasters. All unique, all on trend and all incredibly desirable!

We’re currently experiencing the busiest Autumn we’ve ever had and are working with some great interior designers and customers on some amazing projects! It is so great to see everyones views and interpretations of the Curiousa pendants and how they work so differently in different spaces.

We’ve got some really exciting offers coming up towards the end of November with our Black Friday offers and 12 Pendants of Christmas… But that’s enough of that for now, you’ll have to keep coming back for more!

Decorex 2015 - One of our best shows yet!

Decorex 2015

Another year and another Decorex over! This year’s show was definitely one of our best yet, the stand was continually busy and not only did we meet with some great customers both old and new but we spotted some new suppliers that we’d love to collaborate with when launching some of our next collections.

There was a strong Midlands/Derbyshire presence at the show, one we’d love to see growing! Its always great to see the likes of Arumfellow, Blackpop and Crown Derby and with big dreams of a special collaboration for next year’s show, we’d love to hear from local designers who’d like to work with us to put our lovely piece of England on the map!

Along with all this, we were especially pleased to be chosen as one of the featured #DecorexNew exhibitors. We had a lot of interest in our new bathroom pendants, staircase chandeliers and 'globe chandelier' centrepiece - exclusively revealed at Decorex and to be launched next year.

Decorex 2015 also saw the launch of our latest catalogue – if you’d like to get your hands on one of these then please do get in touch with the team.

DECOREX 2015 - OTHER WORLDS

DECOREX 2015 - OTHER WORLDS

Next month sees the Curiousa team uproot itself from the rolling Derbyshire hills and head on down to the bright lights of the big city, for Decorex 2015.

From the contemporary, playful geometrics of Osborne & Little, to the sumptuous explosion of colour in Blackpop's new Tudor Deconstructed range, designed for the National Portrait Gallery, each 'world' has been carefully designed by Esther Patterson, balancing colour and form of both paper and glass.

Esther will also be taking part in Liberty London's Meet the Designer on Saturday 19th from 12-3pm and talking colour at 100% Design's Pecha Kucha Night on Thursday 24th from 6pm at Olympia London.
