Autumn: The perfect time to work the season into your home

This year, the Hygge trend has taken the interiors community by storm. “Hygge is the art form of creating intimacy in any given moment.” There is nothing quite as comforting as seeing those pictures of blankets, roaring fires, hot baths and intimate lighting. It is the smells, the décor, the lighting and most importantly the feelings we all seek as the seasons change.

We’re very well known for our use of colour and this time of year we’re surrounded by it. There really is nothing like an English Autumn, strolling through parks with such vibrant leaves decorating our paths. Invite those colours into your home and maintain the brightness through your decorative lighting.

When it comes to lighting this winter, the one key message we have is ‘give yourself options’. Your lighting should be bright in the day but cosy at night. We aren’t suggesting to change your bulbs from afternoon to evening, what we would suggest is a dimmer. It is so easy to hibernate away in winter, to stay inside with little lighting and lose days at a time. Though this sounds like the dream, it might make it even harder to make it through those winter months! Enhance the natural light that does make it through by switching dimmers up fully – by enjoying the daytime and keeping busy, you’ll feel a little less cheated when those nights close in!

We have done some extensive research into bulbs this year – with filaments on their way out, LEDs are fast becoming the go-to option. There are still very few decorative LED lights on the market but its something we are committing a lot of time to and promise to bring our customers the best options as and when they are available.

You might be focusing on dining rooms and kitchens for dinner parties and celebrations this festive season but its so important not to forget the rooms where you’ll actually spend most of your time this winter.

If your idea of a perfect winter is hibernating away with some good books then it is definitely worth investing in a good table lamp or reading light. Table lamps are perfect for highlighting your favourite pages, not being intrusive and are so versatile in being moved from one setting to another. A table lamp could be great in giving your living room that extra brightness you need for darker nights and perfect for picking up those metallic hints in the wallpapers that have become so popular this year, just like this Harlequin paper featured here. All just so perfectly hygge.

Light up your home with hygge, hues and a touch of Curiousa! Check out our Autumn inspiration on Pinterest.

Christmas Hours

Today marks the day for our final Christmas orders - that is orders to be placed for Christmas arrival! Though we are still accepting orders and will do our very best to meet deadlines for orders placed after these dates, we can't guarantee a delivery in time for those festive parties!

It's a Derbyshire Life

On Wednesday 2nd November three brands, proudly made in Derbyshire will come together to celebrate the county’s design excellence and creative heritage in the heart of London.

Join us to discover glass lighting skilfully hand-blown by Curiousa & Curiousa, experience elegantly distressed wallpapers, fabrics and furnishings by Blackpop and enjoy festive fizz and luxury local delicacies served on English fine bone china, masterfully hand-crafted by Royal Crown Derby’s skilled artisans.

Meet the creative teams behind the brands’ innovative product ranges, which showcase quintessentially English design and creative eccentricity, and see footage of the traditional processes behind each luxury piece.

The collections will be on display until 22nd December so if you're in London for your Christmas shopping then make sure you pop in!

Beyond Caravaggio at the National Gallery

After the unveiling of Caravaggio’s first public commission in 1600, artists from across Europe flocked to Rome to see his work. Seduced by the pictorial and narrative power of his paintings, many went on to imitate their naturalism and dramatic lighting effects.

An artist that is still able to stir up emotions from fans worldwide, Caravaggio has been a key influencer in colour, drama and mystery for way more than his 400 years.

Having launched our ‘Caravaggio’ pendants in September of this year, we were delighted to recently see the opening of the new exhibition at the National Gallery. The pendants capture our take on Caravaggio with their own playful hint of light, colour and intensity and we can only hope that our collection does its namesake justice.

Christmas Orders

With just over 12 weeks to go until Christmas, we wanted to let you know the deadlines for placing your orders to ensure you can get your pendants hung and taking pride of place at this year's Christmas parties!

Dates for the diary:

  • Bespoke chandeliers and bathroom lights - 18th October
  • Single pendants, 3 or 4 Drop chandeliers - 1st November
  • Discounted stock - 1st December
  • Last posting date - 16th December

Any orders placed after 1st November will be given an 8 week lead time due to a 2 week Christmas closure.

London Design Festival

We're back in Derbyshire and although a little tired, we can't wipe the smiles off our faces as we celebrate what has been our best show yet with this year's Decorex International.

The show was a chance to catch up with familiar faces and designers we've been in touch with throughout the year, not only this but we met hundreds of new designers that we hope to work with on many future projects.

Its also been our first year on the Islington Design District Trail and our Amwell Street showroom has had a steady stream of visitors throughout the week. Whether its the personalised beers and bubbles enticing them or the beautiful new collections from ourselves and Blackpop, its great to be a part of the London design community.

We've highlighted our Top Ten exhibitors and new products for you on our Instagram. Our favourites included beautiful stand designs and new products from A Rum Fellow, Blackpop, Liberty London, Timorous Beasties and Jo Littlefair London.

Follow our Instagram and keep up to date with our latest news.

A Season for Opulence & Mystery

Its the start of London Design Festival and so what better time than now to launch our new Winter Collection.

Embracing autumnal colours and the darkened tones of Winter, the collection celebrates the onset of longer nights and a shift to the indoors, by bringing a sense of warmth, opulence and mystery into our homes.

The Caravaggio Collection takes inspiration from the Italian 16th Century Baroque painter, with sensuous shades and shimmers of light cast through Swarovski crystals. The Collection uses hand-made tassels from Jessica Light, all made to order in her East London workshop using methods dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries.

The Cloak & Dagger range is a first for us, finished with Nickel, Copper and Leather looks. Available either as a set or individually.

Esther explained her thoughts behind the new collections “I just love the rich, dulcet colours the autumn brings, the chance to light the fire and prepare to cosy up for winter. Lighting plays a huge part in setting the right mood and for me the Caravaggio range especially brings a sense of intimate indulgence.”

We look forward to hearing what you think!

Decorex International 2016

Decorex International is synonymous with luxury, and is internationally renowned for being THE event to discover the very best, and most coveted products from over 400 hand-selected exhibitors.

Decorex is the only show that we are doing this year but its a show that is so important to us in understanding the year ahead. Its a great place to catch up with customers old and new and also to see the trends for 2017 from industry experts.

Decorex is also the perfect place for us to launch our Winter collections so if you're at Decorex this year then pop by stand A33 and say hi!

Islington Design District Trail

It will be our first year as part of the London collective and we are so excited to be fully immersed in it all! We'll have bubbles and personalised beers waiting for those making their way around the trail.

The Islington Design District launched in September 2014 as part of the London Design Festival to bring together a new and exciting collection of design-led shops, showrooms and cafes in the Islington area. This year IDD will be back bigger and better.

The new collections from ourselves and Blackpop will be launched as part of London Design Festival meaning the shop will be taking on a whole new style ready for Autumn/Winter 2016 where shimmering beaded tassels and leather finished pendants meet Jackson Pollock inspired wall coverings and fabrics.

Our 39 Amwell Street showroom will be open for the whole of London Design Festival.

Mon - Sun 11.30am - 6.30pm, Tue 11.30am - 9.00pm

Nash at Home

Its that time of year again when we start our build up to London Design Week which means that whilst part of our team are busy behind the scenes preparing the stand for Decorex International, the others are doing what they love most and getting creative at the keyboards putting together the 2016/17 Curiousa brochure!

We wanted to share with you one of our favourite shots to be featured, a shot which was recently taken thanks to our friends at Nash at Home. A unique take on interior design, William and Donna at Nash have set up their home as their showroom, every room accentuates their perfectly syled and eclectic tastes... A photographer's and designers dream!

We're hoping it will be the first of many shoots at Nash. Can't wait to share more with you!

Haarlem Mill - We're in!

One week on and we officially have a new home in Haarlem Mill.

Haarlem Mill, located in the Derbyshire market town of Wirksworth, was built in 1777 by the famed industrialist, Sir Richard Arkwright.  It played a significant role in the birth on the Industrial Revolution as it was the very first mill in the world to use the power of steam.  At its peak it employed over 200 workers, making cotton and silks and is said to be the inspiration behind George Eliott’s classic novel ‘The Mill on the Floss’.

The mill is still in the process of being restored and we’re proud to be part of that regeneration, bringing traditional British manufacturing back to this beautiful building.

Our showroom is open for appointments Monday to Friday where you can get your hands on a range of seconds stock with a 30% discount. Book now!

We're Moving!

Haarlem Mill - Curiousa & Curiousa

Its been quite a year for Curiousa... Not only have we opened up our first London showroom but we've been busy with some incredible projects and more customers than ever before!

To make space for these changes, we've got ourselves a beautiful new home in the form of Haarlem Mill. Just one mile down the road from our current Wirksworth studio, the new mill has undergone some incredible restorations; we've been planning, planning, planning to ensure that the Curiousa pendants will pay homage to the original curved bricks and windows that still remain.

We will be moving between Monday 1st and Friday 5th August, our studio staff will be available however we do ask if you can just bear with us as correspondence may be slightly interrupted! We expect to be back up and running by Monday 8th August.

Our new address is:

Haarlem Mill
Studio 2, Ground Floor
Derby Rd.
Wirksworth

See you all soon!

Jamie's Food Tube

If there is one thing that our team love at Curiousa (apart from lighting of course) it’s food. So you can imagine our excitement every time we tune in to Jamie’s FoodTube and see our glass pendants taking pride of place above Jamie’s head!

Jamie Oliver and his stylist, Sarah Tildesley, have supported us ever since the early days of Curiousa and it is a name that we are so honoured and lucky to associate ourselves with. The glass pendants that Jamie went for are a popular choice for kitchens and are perfect above an island, sink or a breakfast bar.

A little bit of Jamie thrown in with a dash of Curiousa… Bon appétit!!

#CuriousaClub

We’ve just launched a new campaign for all of our lovely social media followers. Every morning the Curiousa team will sit and admire the latest customer photos – we love seeing the different settings they go into (and getting to have a nosey at peoples homes!!) From the very first enquiry we like to get heavily involved in each and every light and so to see the final designs come together is a special moment for everyone!

From here on in we’re going to be using the hashtag #CuriousaClub so that people can share their ideas, their inspirations and photos of their own homes and pendants!

We’d love to see your pictures, your pendants and your homes! Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest and lets get hashtagging:  #CuriousaClub!

We're open!!

Its been a while since our last blog but what a month its been! We have OFFICIALLY now opened the doors to our London showroom and can't wait to show you all around.

Last night was our official launch and we celebrated the only way we know how.. By bringing a bit of Derbyshire to London with pies, cheese, bread and beers! Our event was exclusively sponsored by Peak Ales, the team there were incredible throughout the process, so easy to work with and even going as far as making our own exclusive and bespoke label!

A big thanks also for great beer from Wirksworth based Gaol Ales and sumptuous handmade chocolate from Steeple Grange Chocolate Fairies. Derbyshire Croots pies went down a treat and not to forget the great wheels of Hartington Cheese.

Despite the typical British weather letting us down, the turnout for the launch was incredible. With the official party of the new re-designed Timorous Beasties showroom just across the road, we were enamoured by the visitors that continued to pour in and join the celebrations... We only hope this is a sign of things to come!

We are so excited to hopefully meet even more Curiousa fans and welcome you all along to lose yourself in our little design haven we call 39 Amwell Street!

By appointment only: The bright lights of London!

We’ve been so honoured to retail our lights at Liberty London but often find that people want to see even more of the range. Those that do visit our Wirskworth showroom are always taken aback at the colours, shapes and sizes of the lights and we understand that with such an investment you want to consider all of the options.

A collection of lights, wallpapers, fabrics and furnishings, decorate the walls of No 39 Amwell Street. Being based up in Derbyshire, we have always been that bit too far for our London based customers and designers to visit which is why ourselves and Blackpop will be descending on London with our full collections in tow.

Blackpop are incredible designers with a real passion and flair for design. Their elegantly distressed wallpapers, fabrics and furniture punk up the rich tapestry of the past, to create opulent yet random anarchic patterns, on richly figured fabric and wallpaper, creating vivid designs for stately homes of the future.

From 20th May, we’ll be open for visitors to drop in, to have a browse and a play with colours, create bespoke lights and to get hands-on with the truly luxurious fabrics and wallpapers that adorn this new showroom.

If you’re working on a project that you think Curiousa lights would be great for then we are opening the shop for appointments only for the next month. To book appointments use the details below.

Summer with Curiousa: Soft curves & bold colours

We gave you a glimpse a few blogs ago into the photoshoot – our first with Jennifer Haslem. We had such a great day and as you’ll see from the photos, Jennifer really understood everything we’re about. The pops of colour with the yellow accentuate the playfulness and boldness of the lights being launched.

The lights being launched are the Oshka, the Oolong and the Gobstopper lights. The Russian-doll silhouetted Oshka lights show off their dancing colours against the pastel palettes of the Oolong pendant. Put the two together or simply position them as stand-alone pieces, they’re set to make a statement in any room.

Standing tall amongst the Oshka and Oolong is the Gobstopper light – taking its name from the classic childhood sweet, they are enough to leave any audience speechless!

As with all of our other lights, the pendants are available in all 21 of the Curiousa glass colours, get in touch if you’d like our team to send you one of our sample packs.

We’ve got some BIG news coming very soon but for now, we'll let you enjoy your first taste of summer!

Ragdale Hall becomes 'Beautifully Bespoke'

At the heart of everything we do, sits the word ‘bespoke’. A notion that has started to take off and become known by our customers, a notion that shapes the future for Curiousa.

We were recently approached by Liz Millington Interiors who as part of the refurbishments for Ragdale Hall, were looking for something a bit different for the Verandah Bar lighting. The Hall itself combines state-of-the-art facilities with the charm of traditional Victorian architecture to create one of the most luxurious and relaxing health spas in the country. A mixture of old and new – just what we love!

We’d never designed a chandelier like this one and as we always do with new projects, learnt a lot along the way! There were challenges from electricians, architects, questions about head height and more! As a collaborative project though we were able to work together to figure out how best to utilise what space we did have.

Eight different pendants adorn the ring, with eight different colours of glass in different shapes; those enjoying the pieces can find themselves getting lost in these feature pieces.

“The feedback from the guests has been amazing and they have been very pleased that we’ve been able to update the area without losing the essence of the much loved original room”

We don’t want customers to be afraid to bring their lighting dreams to life; we have some of the best designers, suppliers and glassblowers around… Challenge us!!

Lights. Camera. Action.

We’ve just got back from London after a fantastic photoshoot with Jennifer Haslam for our new lights and the 2016 Collections.

Having styled our own shoots in the past, we decided to take the leap and work with Jennifer to get a different perspective on set designs and how to achieve those front covers and feature shots that populate the mood boards of bloggers and magazine editors.

With so many incredible stylists and photographers in the industry, it was quite a daunting task knowing who was going to understand Curiousa, and come up with a set that would complement the colours, shapes and craftsmanship behind our lights. As soon as Esther met Jennifer, ideas were bouncing around. As with all of our customers, everyone has their own interpretation of style and seeing the ideas come to life was inspiring.

Our photographer for the day was Simon Bevan – a name we saw cropping up again and again as we created our Pinterest inspiration board!

Not only were Jennifer and Simon incredibly professional but so too were the team at Cloud and Horse; they couldn’t do enough for us and looked after us with constant food and refreshments, keeping energy levels and spirits up throughout the day.

Our eyes won’t stray off the inbox until we see the shots filtering in… We’ll be sure to share them with you once they're here!
